Chris Brogan, social media consultant and author of Trust Agents, shares a few tips about how to use LinkedIn (and how not to use LinkedIn). It’s a quick read, and as usual well worth the time. (For more direction on using LinkedIn effectively, I recommend LinkedWorking by Frank Agin and Lewis Howes.)
Chris’ suggestion about using LinkedIn Groups got me thinking. Sure, LinkedIn can help you connect with others in your profession. But take a look at some of the regional groups — such as LinkedWorking Cleveland and Crain’s Cleveland Business, your college alumni association — or even purely social groups like Certified Browns Fans.
Whatever groups you decide to join, to get the most out of them you must be active – participate in discussions. Letting people know what you know and care about is one easy way to help build the essential personal attributes for successful networking: know, like, and trust.
Another under-used LinkedIn feature is the Events function. Looking for networking events? Let your LinkedIn contacts help you!
And to reiterate what Chris said: LinkedIn is a tool to help your networking, not a replacement for it. Use it to find people you’d like to meet, and get out there!

6 Ways to Wow Your Clients Before You Even Meet Them
By Bill Cates – President, Referral Coach International
There are many things you might hope to accomplish on your first appointment with a new prospect or client. I submit that one of those things is to help them feel at ease with you and your process. Everything you do should work toward reducing their stress level and increasing trust. Another important aspect of your first meeting should be to create “wow.” When you make clients go “wow,” you increase your chances of earning their business and earning referrals quickly in the relationship.
When we teach our system at our Referral Boot Camp we spend ample time on what it takes to become referable early in your relationships and then stay referable throughout your relationships. But what about before you even meet? Here are 6 very simple things you can do even before the meeting to reduce their stress and begin their “wow.”

What is networking really worth to you? What is anything really worth to you?
MasterCard likes to take everything as “priceless”. Marketing folks want everything to be “a good value” so that you buy it.
I hear some MBAs and finance folks in the back clamoring that something today is only worth the present value of the future cash flow or earnings from it – and they’re correct!
Investing anything today (time, money, effort, etc) is only worth it if you’re putting in less value today than you reasonably expect to receive in return for it – your RETURN ON INVESTMENT, or ROI.
So what is the return on your networking investment? What are you putting in today and what will you be getting back from it in the future?
Here is a quick and simple formula to find out:

What is business networking … and how do you do it?
When Kelcey and Mark asked me to write a guest post for their Networking Cleveland Blog, my automatic reply was “Sure!” I’m a yes person. Then I thought about what I would write about networking. I never took a networking class, never read a networking book, never even thought about business networking much until about five years ago when I joined my local chamber of commerce. So, what do I know?
